Urgent Notices!

This case was appealed to City Council and was scheduled for hearing on August 11th, 2003. Now it has been withdrawn. We will try to keep you posted if there are further developments.

'P&Z meeting, June 12th, 7:00 PM Continued until June 26th!
Wal-Mart expansion/road vacation
P&Z did not have enough yes votes to pass the street vacation. The applicant may appeal to City Council.
The hearing is scheduled for Thursday, June 12th, at 7:00 p. m. We need informed speakers AND those willing to stand up and be counted, even if they do not speak. (This is a fairly firm meeting time due to previous postponements.) Commissions and councils are influenced by the number of interested people, they judge interest by the willingness to attend meetings and/or write letters.
It was mentioned at the meeting of June 12th that the roadbed is 20' wide. There are subdivisions that only have 20' wide streets. The map displayed at the meeting showed that there are still some R-1 zoned lots and also indicated that some of the land had been re-zoned to commercial. No indication was given as to when this occurred. The hearing was continued at the request of the owner's representative who indicated that he hoped to have the completed administrative development plan completed at that time and would also be able to explain how the sidewalk funds would be escrowed to guarantee that there would be sidewalks along 'most' of Sunshine and Blackman Road.

The P & Z agendas for the 12th and case descriptions are now available on the City's agendas page: (now continued until June 26th) http://www.ci.springfield.mo.us/egov/boards/plan_zon/agendas.html

#16 is a proposed Funeral Home at 3540 East Seminole Street.
All of us should be concerned about the Funeral Home application (#16) due to the body fluid and embalming fluids utilized in the processing of bodies for burial. We live in an area that made up of very porous earth formations with numerous caves and underground streams and we are up-hill from the river associated with the City's drinking water. Shudder the thought of a sewer leak/break/spill.

The next concern with the processes of funeral home work is the possibility of air born contamination from dumpsters, transpiration of waste, etc. There is plenty of information available on the internet concerning the problem of medical waste and neighborhoods.

Next is the traffic. Until the road gets improved, funeral processions and Blackman Rd will not be compatible. I wonder why the traffic counters have been up again so late in the school year, after most of the sports traffic has subsided. I don't know when the last days for Catholic and Glendale were so the last count could have occurred after one or both were dismissed for the summer..

The application to vacate the road bed is a small step in the expansion plans for Wal-Mart, but for us it is the key to holding down the concentration of development on that property. We do not know yet what the eventual plans for that property are because those plans have not been filed with the City to date. It appears the developers are using a one-step-at-a-time process to develop this land. It is the old "how do you boil a frog with his cooperation" principle.

Be alert to possible changes in the schedule! Please, be prepared to be there!

http://www.65809.org is our official newspaper. Don't forget to check in on the calendar of events and review our meeting notes. Last fall, we voted to nominate Larry Daniel for the REALTOR Magazine's annual Good Neighbor Award this year because of his willingness to support our web site AND volunteer his time and skill as the web-master. The application has been completed and submitted. Thank you for those who wrote testimonial letters concerning the value of the web site to our neighborhoods.

If you have not thought to do so, please introduce your neighbors to the web site. The pages can be printed off and placed in your written neighborhood newsletters or communications.
