March, 2000 Newsletter

65809 Community Association Presents
FOR YOUR INFORMATION

March, 2000

The March meeting was canceled due to the lack of pressing business. This newsletter ought to tide you over ‘til the next meeting, Thursday, April 27, 7:30PM, in the Fire Side Room of the East Sunshine Church of Christ, across from Sam’ Club, next to Dairy Queen on East Sunshine.

We received a letter from the WalMart real estate department recently affirming that they were planning to preserve the trees on the property they now own at Sunshine and Blackman. The letter also stated that they do not have definite plans for the land at this time .

The Evangelical Free Church has sold the property on the corner of Blackman and East Cherokee to the Glendale Christian Church, which plans to build on the property but not for a number of years.

At Battlefield and 65, a developer is looking at possibilities. Per the Planned Development Agreement, one neighbor and one professional person selected by the neighborhood group are working with the developer. A neighborhood meeting will be held when the parties come up with a definite proposal. Due to the way this PD is written, its provisions will not expire.

Nothing new to report at this time on the East Sunshine/Chapel Hill rezoning case. The neighbors are monitoring the situation closely, however, and will keep us informed.

Following up on a question from the February meeting, the Logan Rogersville Fire Department does have a reciprocal agreement with the City of Springfield, but it is not automatic. The City has to ask for assistance, so, no, the LRFD does not necessarily come out for a nearby fire within the city limits. So, what do you suppose it would take to improve that situation?

Several months ago, there was a question about the Blackman Road Water Treatment Plant. Dennis Gold, who is in charge of the water treatment plants, provided some valuable information. Filters and pumps are being upgraded at the rate of one a year. There are no plans to take the plant out of service. In fact there are long range plans to run a 36 inch water main towards the southeast in 15 to 20 years. Water is pumped from the James River sporadically depending on need, water quality and river level. The Army Corps of Engineers requires a minimum flow rate in the James River. Water above that level may be pumped off if needed, however, immediately after a heavy rain there may a delay of a couple of days to allow time for the water to clear. Most city water comes out of Fellows Lake because that is a cheaper source. And, the large amount of land around the Blackman Road facilities serves as a buffer for the nearby residential area therefore further development is unlikely.

We talked about Pierson Creek water quality. While the water quality has declined slightly, as indicated by a decline in certain stream organisms, that does not adversely affect its quality as potential drinking water. The greatest threat to water quality is residential development and road run off.

Buddy, can you spare some time? If you enjoy working with your home computer and can manage, on a good day, to send e-mail, then you have what it takes to help with secretarial chores for 65809. The Coordinator could pursue other duties if some one (or two) volunteered to keep the membership roster, send meeting notices and keep the minutes. Contact Ellen at the numbers below if you can help.
