January, 2002 Meeting Notes

65809 Community Association Presents
January, 2002 Meeting Notes

Loring Bullard from the Watershed Committee of the Ozarks talked to us about the importance of clean water to every citizen's health and evaluating the health of rivers and streams. Loring expressed the fundamental principle that the health of our waters is ultimately reflected in the health of area humans. He explored the health status of Pearson Creek and the James River, both of which co-exists with residents
in our area. While both are in fair condition, we need to be diligent about protecting them and maintaining their health.

Lawn care habits, especially in the 65809 zip area, are key to the health of our waters. With simple changes we can have great lawns and healthy streams and rivers at the same time. To name a few: have yard soil tested before applying fertilizers, most lawns will not need fertilizers; choose fertilizers based on soil analysis; instead of a commercial fertilizer, use a mulching mower and allow the clippings to
return to the lawn. Within a few feet of a stream, lake, or any body of water, including detention basins, allow the grass to grow a few inches higher than a typical lawn cut. Higher grass will act as a filter which will catch and hold some
debris before it reaches the water.

If you plan to use a lawn service, check the list of service providers who have agreed to utilize safe lawn care practices. These professional have taken the time to become certified and are committed to protecting the environment with educated
choices of products, they are also committed to educating their customers in the use of environmentally sound lawn care practices. They work through the Show-Me Yards & Neighborhoods Lawn Care Professionals Certification Program. Phone: 417-864-2006. At least one of these resides in 65809.

Concerning the question of septic systems: Loring told us that septic systems can be very effective and safe IF properly constructed in the proper location on a building site and only in the proper soil type and when properly maintained. If you need more information about the proper use of a septic system, contact the Watershed Committee of the Ozarks at their office, 417-866-1127. Many communities are currently evaluating the implementation of a septic district with contracted maintenance service. This would work much like many rural fire districts supported through dues or taxes.

65809 Area River Walk Activity Suggestion
Loring suggested a good warm weather project for the 65809 Community Association in partnership with the Watershed Committee would be to sponsor and conduct a "river-walk" day for Pearson Creek and or the James. This activity would be a fun and educational family activity and allow us to becoming acquainted with our neighbors. Anyone who is interested in this activity, please contact us. If it develops, we will advertise the event.

Respectfully submitted,
Aleta Dyer, Coordinator
